Greek Mythological Story of Echo

Echo was a forest nymph with a beautiful voice who liked to talk a lot. To put her skills to “good” use, she would use her love of talking to distract Hera, wife of Zeus. Echo kept up the distraction so that Zeus could more easily keep his love affairs from his wife. Hera was clueless for a while, but she eventually found out about the trick being played on her and punished Echo. From that point on, Echo was unable to speak, except to repeat the shouted words spoken by someone else.

Meanwhile, Echo had fallen in love with the gorgeous Narcissus (the boy who wasted away staring at his own reflection). Narcissus rejected Echo, and Echo wasted away herself watching Narcissus, until all that was left of Echo is her voice – only noticed when one shouts, of course.
